Over 11 million people in the Horn of Africa are facing the worst drought to hit in 60 years. Food and water shortages are causing great havoc for the residents. Regions being affected include Northern Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and Southern Sudan. Children are especially at risk, with the projected number of 65,000 Kenyan children expected to die. Due to the ongoing malnutrition and exhaustion, reports have found that in Somalia, one in six children will die before their fifth birthday. The effects of the drought are taking a disastrous toll on the residents, leaving them barely able to survive.
People are fleeing to nearby counties, only to find overcrowded relief camps, with poor sanitation and living conditions. Beyond the need for food and nutritional help, those affected also need clean water, health care, protection and shelter. Aside from these basic necessities, the situation is becoming increasingly more chaotic, with the increasing spread of cholera, typhoid, and measles. Without immediate action, the fate of these people will be a tragic one.
